The Restoration Process

Every effort is made to save as much original glass as possible.  Repairs are accomplished using a variety of techniques, each suited to particular situations.  All methods are non-destructive and reversible.  When necessary, replacement glass is used that matches the original.  Repairs are documented, using ‘rubbings’ (full-sized tracings made on rag vellum), and photographs.  Following, is a brief look at some of the steps involved in repair and restoration of stained glass windows.

Rubbings are used to preserve the integrity of the window during the restoration process.  Documentation of any necessary repair or replacements is recorded on an archival rag vellum rubbing.

Most often, significant repairs or complete restoration require re-leading.  The lead in the windows has deteriorated, rendering it useless, but making disassembly relatively easy.

Water is used whenever possible during the disassembly and cleaning process.  Care is taken to prevent damage to the glass surface and painted details.
